Artist Statement - Josh Sollman

Born in 1983, I am an artist and musician based in Vincennes, Indiana. My ongoing Album Art Series is both deeply personal and outward-looking—a lifelong project exploring the space where sound and vision converge.

Each piece begins with a simple ritual: I choose an album, press play, and let the music guide my hand. The duration of the album sets the time limit; beyond that, there are no rules, no sketches, and no preconceived ideas. What emerges is an improvisation in visual form, a spontaneous dialogue between audio and visual stimulation.

The Album Art Series was exhibited at Art Space Vincennes in 2025, as part of the First Friday Art Walk, and is currently featured at Arts Unleashed Presents: The Gallery at 114 E Main St in Washington, Indiana. Individual works, such as #223 A Ghost Is Born, are also on display at Cherry Ghost Coffeehouse in Washington. Each venue becomes an extension of the listening and viewing journey I invite audiences to take.

This body of work extends beyond framed drawings or digital pieces. At exhibitions, visitors are encouraged to engage with custom-built cabinets filled with record-sized artworks—tactile, interactive “albums” of visual form. Blurring the boundaries between objects, sounds, and visual observations that comprise the viewer's experience.

Above all, my goal is to create immersive spaces where music and art intertwine. I view each finished piece as an open invitation: find the album that speaks to you, spend time with both the music and the art, and allow yourself to discover resonance in the connection. That discovery—whether visual, aural, guttural, or emotional—is my gift to you, the viewer.
